Riichi Mahjong
This is a game played by four players using pieces called tiles, which are similar to playing cards.
The game proceeds in turns for multiple rounds, until finally a winner is decided based on his points.
It's a deep, dynamic game, yet it's easy to talk over and play casually without ruining the competitiveness.
The tiles
The pieces used in this game are called tiles, and they each have a suit and value, just like playing cards.
There are four copies of each tile. Here are all the tiles:
Dragon (Red, Green, White)
Wind (East, South, West, North)
The back of a tile (this is not a separate tile, but simply any tile flipped upside down)
Gameplay
In many ways, Mahjong is simple - there are few actions you can take.
On the contrary, it's complex because there's a lot of variety and depth to the rules.
The primary gameplay of Mahjong is to arrange the tiles you are dealt until you have a winning hand.
Deciding which hand to arrange is a matter of balancing speed and value.
If I didn't miss any, these are all the actions you can take during play:
- Draw and discard a tile (Believe it or not - this is almost all of the gameplay)
- Group your tiles together
- Declare you are about to win and make a bet
- Declare that you won
- Forfeit the round (Happens rarely)
